Good planning helps property owners compare options, identify hidden site issues, and communicate a clearer scope before an estimate is prepared.

Start below the concrete

A slab performs only as well as the material supporting it. Remove unsuitable soil and organic material, establish drainage, place the specified base, and compact it appropriately.

Drainage and subgrade decisions are difficult to correct after concrete is placed. Soft spots, pumping soil, buried organics, and uncontrolled fill should be addressed first.

Match thickness and reinforcement to the load

A patio, passenger-vehicle garage, farm shop, equipment area, and structural foundation do not have the same demands. Concentrated loads, lifts, walls, posts, and future equipment should be disclosed during planning.

Tell the contractor about vehicle lifts, loaded trailers, tractors, point loads, masonry walls, interior bearing lines, posts, safe rooms, and heavy equipment before thickness is selected.

Coordinate embeds and utilities

Anchor bolts, post brackets, drains, plumbing, conduit, radiant tubing, sleeves, and thickened areas must be located before the pour. Last-minute changes can be difficult or impossible.

Create a coordinated drawing for all underground and embedded items. Verify dimensions from finished wall faces, door openings, and equipment layouts rather than rough assumptions.

Plan joints and transitions

Control joints, isolation joints, construction joints, door thresholds, aprons, and tie-ins help manage movement and connect the slab to surrounding work.

Joint layout should consider slab geometry, columns, reentrant corners, door openings, floor drains, interior walls, equipment anchors, and adjacent pours.

Allow proper curing and protection

Concrete gains strength over time. Weather, finishing, curing method, early loading, deicing chemicals, and moisture exposure all influence long-term surface performance.

Protect fresh concrete from freezing, rapid drying, premature traffic, impact, and chemical exposure. Appearance expectations should be discussed before placement and finishing.

  • What loads will the slab or foundation support?
  • How will the subgrade and base be prepared?
  • What thickness and reinforcement are specified?
  • Where are drains, embeds, and utilities?
  • How will curing and early loading be managed?
